Cloverleaf Speedway Memories

Early '60s action at Cloverleaf Speedway.
Cleveland, OH was home to a great paved, quarter-mile track from 1960-1990.  Friday, July 20 is the annual Cloverleaf Speedway Reunion and Hall of Fame.  Here are some memories.......
The legendary Tony DeLillo.  Being inducted into this year's Cloverleaf Speedway Hall of Fame.

This is probably my favorite photo of Jack Chambers.  Always brings a smile to my face.  Being inducted into this year's Cloverleaf Speedway Hall of Fame

Scott Baker leads Walt Ellis (an inductee in this year's Hall of Fame), around turns three and four on the 'Leaf's tricky quarter mile in the early '80s.

  1. The best track ever dirt or paved !! Canfield Speedway a close second. Lorain County Speedway, with their split shows, Super Modifides and Late Models. Sandusky Speedway with a full show of Super Modifides. As the song said " Those were the days my friend, we thought they'ed never end " . But they did, sadly enough, thanks to technical advances , the cost of racing parts, and purses that didn't keep up with the costliness of fielding a competitive race car. In other words, the cost of EVERYTHING went sky high. Without sponsors the weekend racers were priced out of competition which resulted in small fields. The generations that have followed will never see exciting racing of inverted starts ( where the faster cars were placed at the back of the field, to allow the "slower" cars a chance to qualify for the feacher event. " Straight-up" starts are like watching a freight train --- boring as HELL. This from an "Old School Race Fan" ----- Jerry Hornack '''' P.S. Remember Austrlian Pursuit races !! Drivers; Bob James, Mike Klaypack, Roy Gemberling, Bud Middough, Bill Forny, Bob Ashbrook, Tony Di Anno, The Moore Brothers, Bill Goodnight, just to name few ---- yes " those were the days my friend "
